This is our cosy artists' and poets'
cottage in Ireland
Peace, silence and lots of wildlife. Dark
nights. Just the thing for writing, painting, thinking.
Huge separate studio, yew hedge maze, Druid grove, fairy fort, two
streams and three acres of rough land.
It is on the side of a mountain, near Strokestown, in Co. Roscommon,
Ireland. Photos

Reagh
(pronounced Ree-ah)
is
one the
traditional stone built cottages typical of the west of Ireland, very
rural and with tremendous views.
The cottage is approached by a single track lane, half a mile from the
nearest road. It sits in the middle of its own land, which
comprises four fields and a garden, bounded by streams on both sides.
It still has its huge open turf
(peat) fire, with lots of free turf in the turf shed. The mod cons are
basic - hot and cold running water from its own well, and electric night
storage heating. This is permanently left on, so the cottage is always
warm - important if you arrive in the evening! It has a reasonable
Vodafone mobile signal, and very basic tv.
Accommodation is flexible: the cottage has
a living room with open fire, sofa and table; one
bedroom with a double bed, and one tiny study/bedroom with a fold-up camp bed.
There is a small back kitchen with a simple electric cooker, kettle,
toaster etc. The bathroom has an electric immersion heater and
bath. The huge studio also contains a single bed in the gallery and a single sofa bed.
Arrangements
for staying are informal, and our lovely friends always treat the house
and studio beautifully and leave them as they found them; in fact
usually better! We like lending Reagh to artists, writers, naturalists -
people for whom old fashioned peace and wild beauty is more important than
luxury.
For this reason the price is low (principally to cover
electricity, which is expensive) basically 200 euros (approx 160 pounds)
per week.
Minimum stay is one week, and the price is for the cottage not
per person.Single very well behaved dogs are welcome.
We request that our visitors bring their own bedding and towels, and
also take their rubbish away with them.
